Guide to Your Singapore Citizenship Application

Achieving Singaporean citizenship is a prestigious milestone that provides full access to the benefits of one of the world's most prosperous and stable countries. As a Singapore citizen, you'll enjoy a high standard of living, exceptional healthcare, top-quality education, and a secure and safe environment. Additionally, citizenship allows you to fully engage in the democratic process, including voting in elections and standing for public office.

Becoming a citizen of Singapore is a significant commitment, requiring the renunciation of other nationalities. It reflects a deep connection to Singapore, a commitment to its values, and a dedication to contributing to its growth. The path to citizenship is thorough and demanding, necessitating that applicants demonstrate their integration into Singaporean society, their commitment to the nation, and their potential for long-term contributions.

Eligibility and Requirements for Singapore Citizenship

The criteria for obtaining Singaporean citizenship are designed to recognize various types of applicants who are committed to establishing Singapore as their long-term home. Eligibility can be achieved through direct family connections with Singaporean citizens or by demonstrating a substantial period of study, work, or residency in Singapore as a Permanent Resident. These requirements underscore Singapore's dedication to embracing individuals who contribute positively to its community and integrate into its society.

Singapore Permanent Residents

To apply for citizenship, you must have been a Singapore Permanent Resident for at least two years and have resided in Singapore during this time.

Spouses of Singapore Citizens

If you are legally married to a Singaporean citizen, you are eligible to apply for citizenship after holding Permanent Resident status for two years.

Children Born Abroad

Children born outside of Singapore to Singaporean parents are eligible to apply for citizenship.

Students

Students who have held Permanent Resident status for a minimum of one year and have completed at least three years of education in Singapore may apply. They must have passed at least one national examination (such as PSLE, GCE ‘N’ / ‘O’ / ‘A’ levels) or be enrolled in the Integrated Programme (IP).

Economic Contributions

Those who have made substantial economic contributions, including entrepreneurs and investors, may qualify for citizenship through special considerations.

Benefits

Advantages of Singapore Citizenship

Singapore ranks among the top three best passports globally, making its citizenship highly desirable to many foreign applicants. Every Singaporean citizen benefits from a range of advantages that significantly enhance their quality of life and offer long-term security and opportunities.

Full Employment Rights

Enjoy the freedom to work in any profession without needing additional work permits, allowing for unrestricted career advancement.

Access to Subsidized Healthcare

Take advantage of Singapore's premier healthcare system, which offers substantial subsidies for public hospitals and clinics.

Educational Benefits

Citizens receive priority access to local schools and benefit from reduced tuition fees for higher education.

Property Ownership

Citizens can buy homes from the Housing Development Board (HDB) and are eligible to purchase government-subsidized Built-To-Order (BTO) flats, especially if they are first-time property buyers.

Travel Perks

Holders of a Singapore passport experience minimal travel restrictions, with many countries offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry.

Pension Scheme

Under the Central Provident Fund (CPF) scheme, both Singaporean and Permanent Resident employees, along with their employers, contribute to a pension fund. This fund supports various needs, including home ownership, healthcare, education, family protection, asset growth, and tax benefits.

Obligations

Obligations of Singapore Citizenship

While Singaporean citizenship offers many benefits, it also comes with specific responsibilities. Citizens are expected to comply with Singapore’s laws and fulfill their civic duties as prescribed by the country's regulations. The key obligations include:

No Dual Nationality

Singapore does not permit dual citizenship. Therefore, new citizens must renounce their previous citizenship through their respective embassies before finalizing their Singaporean citizenship. However, Singaporean children can hold dual citizenship until they are required to serve National Service (for males) or until they reach the age of 21.

National Service

According to the Enlistment Act, all male Singaporean citizens and Permanent Residents (PRs) are obligated to serve in National Service (NS). Registration for NS is compulsory upon turning 16, with enlistment usually taking place at age 18, before commencing university studies.

CPF Withdrawal Limitations

Singaporean citizens and PRs can withdraw excess CPF funds based on their account balances once they turn 55. From age 65, they are eligible to receive monthly payouts from their CPF Retirement Account (RA) until death, based on their RA balance.
